Magazine stand, Yreka, California,
July 1942

On July 4, 1942, American newsstands like this one in Yreka, California, displayed a spectacular sight — dozens of magazines covered with images of the U.S. flag. Many also carried the slogan United We Stand — a patriotic rallying cry dating back to the American Revolution — and urged readers to buy war bonds. The magazines shown in the photograph are Woman’s Home Companion, McCall’s, True Love and Romance, Good Housekeeping, Screenland, and True Romances.
