Romantic views of the American landscape formed a backdrop for the flag on a number of July 1942 covers. Some magazines celebrated the abundance of the nation’s farmland, replacing 1930s images of dust-bowl devastation with scenes of fertile fields producing food for the war effort. Others captured Main Street, U.S.A., or the natural beauty of the country’s scenery, sources of national pride and enduring images of American identity.
