CASS GILBERT COLLECTION, 1897-1936,
#214

Scope and Content

The contents of the collection date from 1897 to 1936. The bulk of the collection consists of bound volumes of photo prints of forty-one Cass Gilbert buildings under construction between 1908 and 1936. (This represents less than half of his firm's total output.) The volumes are arranged alphabetically by name of building.  A few additional photo prints of buildings under construction are found in the unbound materials in boxes 4 and 71.  See container list for additional information.

The collection also includes correspondence (1919-1932), contracts, statistical data, news clippings, booklets, and other miscellaneous Gilbert papers. Three volumes of correspondence, specifications and blue prints, 1932-1935, for the construction of the Supreme Court Building are in boxes 72-74. Also included are twenty pencil and pastel sketchbooks of Gilbert's travels in Europe, 1897-1932, and a flat oversize box of miscellaneous loose sketches (including photo prints and negatives of his studies for the George Washington Bridge).

Collections of Cass Gilbert's personal papers and records of his business firm are located in a number of archival repositories. A partial list of these locations is in the Archives Center control file for this collection.

The collection consists of fifteen cubic feet of material housed in sixty-nine volumes in flat boxes, three document boxes, one half-document box, and one flat oversize box.   Go to Container List.
