HISTORY OF THE ORGANIZATION

The Department of Linguistics dates its beginnings to an inter-
departmental Master of Arts program in 1960. The program prospered,
offering a doctoral program in 1962. A full bachelor's program in
1965 was further augmented in 1966 with the addition of Peter
Ladefoged and his Phonetics Laboratory, and was granted Department
status.

The Department is known for its experimental study of linguistic
phonetics and its theoretical linguistics, with particular know-
ledge of African and American Indian languages.
