About the Council

The Smithsonian Council for American History is a membership group for those dedicated supporters who contribute annual gifts of $1,000 or more to the National Museum of American History.

Contributions help to fund the work of the Museum: collecting, preserving, and displaying artifacts that tell the story of America and its many peoples. Every gift supports a variety of critical needs, from the preservation of fragile treasures, to world-class exhibitions and programs.

Council members receive an array of exclusive membership benefits in appreciation of their generosity.

“All of the objects found within these walls are the real thing, no facsimiles, no reproductions or approximations. In their various ways, they are talismans, objects with magic power, and their power is in the multitude of stories they tell—our stories, and the ideas those stories embody. How can we love our country and take no interest in its story?”
