The Confederate States Ordnance Bureau had a structure based on the U.S. system. In that system, an armory was used exclusively for the manufacture of arms. Initially, the Confedercy had two armories. The Richmond Armory in Richmond, Virginia primarily manufactured the model 1855 rifled-musket from machinery captured at Harpers Ferry.
