Military saddle used by Mexican mounted troops. This saddle was taken by Col. William S. Harney at the battle of Cerro Gordo.

General History

The Battle of Cerro Gordo was fought 17-18 April 1847. Following the surrender of Vera Cruz in late March, Winfield Scott began his drive westward toward the Mexican capital. The first significant opposition from Santa Anna's forces occurred at Cerro Gordo, a town located in a 10,000-foot mountain pass about 60 miles inland. American engineering forces including Robert E. Lee, averted dire situation. They discovered an obscured path, which enabled the United States forces to outflank their opponents. Santa Anna was forced to flee on foot.
