From the Smithsonian Collection
This early steam-powered Locomobile was given to the Smithsonian Institution in 1929 by Mrs. H. H. Smith, the daughter of the original owner, W. E. Todd of Fayetteville, N.Y. Mr. Todd purchased it in July 1901. The car, designated as "Style 2," is car no. 2795 and carries a maker's plate bearing the patent date of November 14, 1899. The Locomobile Company first made cars in Newton, Mass., and then in Bridgeport, Conn. The museum's car is one of the early products of the Bridgeport factory.
Physical Description
This car is a two-seat, steam-powered automobile, with a straight dash, tiller steering, wire wheels, and a 58" wheel base. It has a wooden body that rests on three full-elliptic springs. The boiler and engine are below the seat of the body; the feed-water tank is below the rear of the body. The right-front tire was replaced in 1948, and the car was restored in 1961.
