This image (possibly mis-dated as being from 1960) shows two 6000-series trains at the Western Avenue station on the West Side, one of many new modern stations along the CTA's Congress Line--the first rapid transit line built in the median strip of a highway in the U.S.

History |

As part of the push to modernize rapid transit operations in Chicago in the 1950s, the CTA replaced the Garfield Park branch of the original Metropolitan Elevated Railroad with the Congress Line, down the median strip of the new Congress (later Eisenhower) Expressway.
