IMAGE USE PERMISSION REQUEST

For any publication or media use, please contact Division staff by mail, phone, or fax (see contact information below) to discuss the type of publication or other use. We will determine the usage fee and send you a permission request form for completion. When the form and fee have been received, we will return your signed permission request, and you may then order an image from Smithsonian Photographic Services.

According to the Smithsonian's Terms of Use, you may use images on this website for personal, educational, non-commercial, and other fair use purposes. These uses do not require a formal permission request.

For other uses, permission to publish is granted for one-time, non-exclusive use, world rights. Subsequent editions or other publication is considered a new request.

Permission fees:
Editorial or special media use (such as textbook, academic journal, book cover, etc.) $100 each

Non-editorial use (website, magazine, television, video, etc.) $200 each; (motion picture) $400 each

Restrictions on use:
No photographic materials supplied from the Smithsonian Institution may be used to show or imply that the Smithsonian endorses any commercial product or enterprise, concurs with the opinions expressed in, or confirms the accuracy of any text used with these images.

Certain works may be protected by copyright, trademark, or related interests not owned by the Institution.
