Washington is holding a scroll upon which is printed, "We declare ourselves free and independent. Behind him is a depiction of the Battle of Bunker Hill. Above him are bust portraits of the first eight presidents of the U.S. The print is flanked by two columns intended to represent New England rising out of Old England surmounted by Hope and Liberty.
