Map to the Flight 93 crash site
Description: This directional flyer, handed out by tollbooth operators at the Somerset exit on the Pennsylvania Turnpike, gives driving instructions to the United Airlines Flight 93 crash site and temporary memorial in Shanksville, Pennsylvania.

Context: Following the terrorist attacks of September 11, many people visited the World Trade Center, Pentagon, and Pennsylvania sites to see the damage for themselves and pay their respects to those who died. The Turnpike Commission produced this flyer because so many people asked the tollbooth attendants at the Somerset exit of the Pennsylvania Turnpike for directions to the isolated crash site of United Airlines Flight 93.

The passengers aboard United Airlines Flight 93 were widely hailed by the press as heroes for their decision to fight back against the terrorists. After hearing by phone the fate of the other hijacked planes, a number of passengers organized and stormed the cockpit of the airplane. Ultimately the Boeing 757 crashed in an open field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania, killing all seven crew members, 33 passengers, and four hijackers, but sparing what officials believe was another intended target in Washington, D.C.
