Pentagon rescuer's uniform and citation
Description: This uniform was worn by Col. Mark Volk, Chief, Strategic Leadership division, Office of the Army, during the terrorist attack on the Pentagon.

Context: Col. Mark Volk was one of the brave Pentagon employees who helped save colleagues trapped in the damaged Pentagon. As an intense fire raged, Col. Volk ordered an evacuation and rushed from his office on the third floor of the D ring to the E ring to look for survivors. In recognition of his actions Col. Volk was awarded a Meritorious Service Medal.

Uniform beret
Colonel Mark Volk’s uniform beret was left on his desk while he helped clear areas in the Pentagon. The eagle insignia, now tarnished and discolored, shows heat damage from the fire.
