Port Authority police memorial
Description: This rescue helmet and vest were part of the Port Authority of New Jersey and New York Police Department memorial at the site of the World Trade Center. Context: When the first plane crashed into the World Trade Center, the Port Authority Police Department immediately responded. Officers rushed into the north tower to rescue the trapped occupants and organize a safe evacuation. When the two towers collapsed, 37 men and women of the Port Authority Police Department and one police dog were killed. In the days following the attack, makeshift memorials to those who died emerged around the city. This helmet and vest were used in the recovery operation before they were added to the memorial at the site of the World Trade Center.
