Description: This name tag was worn by Captain Kathy Mazza, as she led rescue efforts on September 11, 2001.

Context: Kathy Mazza dedicated her life to helping others. She’d begun her career as a nurse, and after working in the medical field for over a decade, she applied to the Port Authority police academy. Her medical background influenced her police work, and she began a program to install defibrillators in airports. In 1999 Kathy was honored as New York City’s Basic Life Support Provider of the Year. Kathy quickly climbed the ranks, and in April 1999 she became the second female to obtain the rank of Captain at the Port Authority Police.

After the terrorist attack on the World Trade Center, Port Authority Police Department officers rushed to the scene to aid in the evacuation. Captain Kathy Mazza and four fellow Officers, Chief James Romito, Officers James Parham, Stephen Huczko, and Paul Laszczynski, and Lt. Robert Cirri were killed in the collapse of the North Tower as they carried a woman, incapable of using the stairs, in an evacuation chair. Earlier in the morning, Captain Mazza had shot at the glass walls, to help people escape the North Tower. The Port Authority Police Department lost thirty-seven officers in the attacks on the World Trade Center.
