Patriotic ribbon
Description: This simple red, white, and blue ribbon pin was made by Annette Harris of Virginia Beach, Virginia, after September 11. Context: Looped ribbons have been used for decades in the United States to indicate support or identification with a cause (the Iran hostages—yellow ribbons, breast cancer research—pink ribbons, AIDS research—red ribbons, etc.). Shortly after September 11 many homemade patriotic ribbons, such as these, were distributed by their makers to friends and colleagues. This particular ribbon was given out at a Scottish Country Dancing event in Arlington, Virginia, in October 2001.
