9.11.01 silkscreen print
This silkscreen print by Andrea Arroyo depicts the Twin Towers in words. Context:
Andrea Arroyo’s artistic response to the events of September 11 took shape as a silkscreen image of the Twin Towers, represented in rows of type forming the word “UNREAL.” At the upper levels of the towers, clouds of black, red, and yellow evoke the points of impact and the fires that followed. The words can be read as the World Trade Center’s floors or simply as a repetition of many people’s reactions. She presents the blocks of the World Trade Center at the moment of the attacks, with vivid color penetration at the two points of impact by the airplanes.
Arroyo’s work was noted in the New York Times
and the New Yorker,
among other publications, and it is a powerful graphic response to the attacks.
