Judith Jaidinger created this black and white wood engraving as a 2001 holiday card to express her feelings following the September 11 terrorist attacks.
The engraving depicts the New York skyline under the weeping head of the Statue of Liberty, with the buildings of New York gathered together by the statue for protection and consolation.
In describing the work the artist said, "I could not escape the influence of September 11th when I was working on sketches for Christmas 2001." Reflecting a national uncertainty on the appropriateness of using September 11 imagery, Jaidinger wasn't sure whether to go ahead with a card or not. After it was printed and sent, she received an overwhelming response from friends who shared the same feelings of shock and sadness.
