To collect material and not respect their experiences and their roles was very difficult. There was an urge when you're faced with one of these dramatic stories to collect material just because of that person, to honor them. And we had to think very long and hard, and try to remove ourselves and talk to each other to really take a second and third look at whether an object being considered was the right object.
It was a very consultative process. An individual had a very difficult time deciding by themselves, but as a group I think we made much better decisions. We often tried to go out with more than one person to sites, so that we could talk to each other as we were there, and work collectively, and try to come up with good choices for the collections.
