"...when September 11 happened she knew what she had to do to create this book."
The woman who made this scrapbook lives in Mobile, Alabama. She's a published poet, and she told me the events of September 11 caused her to feel for the first time as an American, and not just as an African American, which I thought was quite remarkable. And she is a very sensitive person, a very creative person.

She had been invited to prepare a scrapbook for a competitive exhibition near where she lives. And so a few days before September 11 she actually bought an old ledger book at a flea market or antique shop to use for this preparation. And a few days later when September 11 happened she knew what she had to do to create this book.

She's a poet and a religious person so there is a great deal of sentiment related to religion and poetry throughout the book.
