Spanish Print of a Slave

Spanish Print of a Slave

This image, depicting a slave, is one of a series by the Spanish baroque painter Luis Paret y Alcázar. These drawings were then made into engravings for the book Colección de trajes de España, (A Collection of Spanish Costumes), published in 1777. It is a romanticized depiction of enslaved black women in the Americas whose domestic chores included providing child care for white families. The woman's pose and the baby she is holding are also very reminiscent of depictions of the Madonna and Christ Child, a common subject in Catholic art.
