Spanish Print of a Jíbaro

Spanish Print of a Jíbaro

This print of a jíbaro (or rural Puerto Rican) is by the Spanish court painter Luis Paret y Alcázar, created during his exile on the island in the late 1770s. Along with the drawing of an enslaved woman, this set of illustrations was produced for the 1777 book, Colección de trajes de España, (A Collection of Spanish Costumes). This depiction of a jíbaro is quite stylized and romanticized.
