Roosevelt Inaugural Medal, 1905

Bronze tones in different ways, depending on environmental and chemical factors. This darkened area may be the result of an oil residue deposited on the surface of the metal when this piece was struck.

To the surface of this presidential inaugural medal, Saint-Gaudens brought a lettering style influenced by the Beaux Art graphic movement which tended to group (or arrange) and block letters for stronger visual effect. This type of lettering was later used on the Saint-Gaudens twenty dollar design.
