United States, 10 Dollars, 1908

Saint-Gaudens's concept for this new $10 coin featured uncharacteristically large figures for the date. His training as a sculptor influenced his sense of balance and flow. The date becomes a sculptural element, supporting the portrait.

The "Liberty" motto was legally mandated for coins in the Mint Act of 1792, but Saint-Gaudens did not want its placement to interfere with the modern aesthetic he was seeking in this design.
