United States, 1 Cent, 1974 (Aluminum)

In 1909, the centennial year of his birth, a portrait of Abraham Lincoln was placed on the one cent coin. He was the first American president to be so honored, and his image remains on the cent today.

"In God We Trust" first appeared on the one cent coin in 1909. It had appeared in the mid-1860s on larger American coins—the result of an effort by Abraham Lincoln himself to help heal the nation. Later, in 1909 when the cent was redesigned to include an image of Lincoln, this motto also appeared.
