Original construction:
40-foot pyramidal wooden tower on Shell Castle Island, made useless by a shift in the channel, and destroyed by lightning in 1818

Rebuilds:
1823: present 75-foot conical brick tower

Status:
automated in 1959; active aid to navigation

Light characteristic:
fixed white visible for 15 nautical miles
