Original construction:
light and keepers quarters atop multi-legged iron pilings, destroyed by storm in 1851

Rebuilds:
1860: present 114-foot granite tower

Status:
automated in1947; active aid to navigation

Light characteristic:
flashing white 1-4-3; fog signal one blast every 10 seconds
