Year established: 1792
Latitude: 36 deg 55 min 33 sec N
Longitude: 76 deg 0 min 29 sec W
Height above sea level: 164 feet

Original construction:
90-foot brick-lined sandstone tower

Rebuilds:
1881: first tower deactivated, replaced with present 163-foot tall octagonal pyramidal tower; cast-iron plate on masonry, with upper and lower half of each face alternately black and white

Status:
automated in 1984; active aid to navigation

Light characteristic:
white Morse code "U" [two short, one long flash] every 20 seconds visible for 17 nautical miles, and red sector visible for 15 nautical miles

Notes:
the oldest lighthouse on the Chesapeake Bay and the third oldest lighthouse still standing in the US
