Discussion:
This sextant belonged to Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine. The frame is brass. The silvered scale is graduated every 10 minutes from -5o to +160o and read by vernier with tangent screw and swinging magnifier to 10 seconds of arc. The signature is probably that of Alexander Cairns, an instrument dealer working in Liverpool, England during the third quarter of the 19th century.
