Discussion:
This telescope has an achromatic objective, and a brass body covered with black leather. It belonged to Theodorus Bailey Myers Mason (1848-1899), a career naval officer, and was probably bought around the time that Mason graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy. Mason's sister Cassie (Mrs. Julian) James, a Washington socialite who started the First Ladies Collection, placed it at the Smithsonian in 1912
