Discussion:
The house of Bardou was established in Paris in 1818, and by the end of the
century had become the leading manufacturer of small telescopes for educational and recreational purposes in France. The U.S. Life-Saving Service was established in 1871, and merged with the U.S. Revenue Cutter Service in 1915 to become the U.S. Coast Guard. This telescope has an achromatic objective, an erecting eyepiece, and a two-section brass draw tube covered with leather. The Smithsonian purchased it in 1966.
