In 1898, John L. Bliss obtained a patent for a log with a counter (more easily read than a dial), and an improved driving spindle and bearing. In this example, the counter indicates nautical miles and tenths of a mile. A label in the lid of the box states that the Bliss Star Log was “designed to meet the requirements of modern, high speed ocean steamship", where great strength, durability and accuracy are demanded."
