TITLE Orville C. Shirey DESCRIPTION Orville C. Shirey CONTEXT Orville C. Shirey was commissioned 2d Lt., Infantry, in June, 1942 after ROTC training at the University of Maryland. He completed the Infantry School Basic Course at Fort Benning, Georgia, and was assigned to the 84th Division, where he commanded a rifle company. Shirey was ordered to join the 442d Combat Team in February, 1943 upon its activation, and served with the unit continuously until January, 1946. He was awarded the Combat Infantryman's Badge, the Legion of Merit, and the Medaglia al Valore Militare (Italy). He is the author of AMERICANS: The Story of the 442d Combat Team, and became general editor of a series of some 40 histories of World War II units published by the Infantry Journal Press.
