National Memorial to Patriotism, Washington, DC (detail)

DESCRIPTION
National Memorial to Patriotism, Washington, DC (detail)

"The bronze centerpiece is a powerful metaphor that depicts two cranes struggling from barbed wire shackles toward the freedom of the skies."
National Japanese American Memorial Foundation

CONTEXT
The Oklahoma sculpter Nina Akamu created the statue of the cranes at the heart of the Memorial. The Memorial is located just north of the Capitol on a triangular plot bounded by Louisiana Avenue, New Jersey Avenue and D Street NW.

"Authorized by an Act of Congress in 1992, the National Japanese American Memorial Foundation (NJAMF) constructed the National Memorial to Patriotism honoring the courage and loyalty of Japanese Americans under extraordinary circumstances during World War II. By its approval, Congress and the President acknowledged the nation's error and recommitted itself to the historic ideals of justice and equality for all."
