"Together with my parents I was interned in the camp. My father with the telegram in his hand told us that my brother Ralph who joined the 442nd [Combat Team] was reported wounded. The telegram read: your son Sakai R. Sugimoto Private 1st Class was slightly wounded in France. You will be advised as reports of condition are received."

"According to a traditional Japanese custom, when a soldier went to battle, his mother prepared a sash covered with one thousand stitches, each sewn knot contributed by an individual well-wisher. This good luck charm was believed to keep the soldier free from any harm."
