TITLE Map/plan of Jerome Relocation Center DESCRIPTION Map/plan of Jerome Relocation Center CONTEXT "Completely surrounded by snake-infested waters, the camp sat on a remote region of swampland in southeastern Arkansas. The War Relocation Authority (WRA) found that the natural dangers of the area created a more effective boundary than any barbed-wire fence; unlike the other nine camps, Jerome had no guard towers, and only a low fence demarcated the camp perimeter. [Four species of poisonous snakes inhabited the swampland surrounding Jerome.]" Henry Sugimoto: Painting an American Experience CREDIT Courtesy of Juichi Kamikawa Japanese American Documentary Collection, Archives Center, National Museum of American History, Smithsonian Institution |
