TITLE Gordon Hirabayashi at Supreme Court DESCRIPTION Gordon Hirabayashi at Supreme Court Gordon Hirabayashi and Japanese American Citizens League representative Grace Uyehara. Appearing before the Supreme Court in support of the class action lawsuit, United States v. Horhi et al. CONTEXT In 1942 Gordon Hirabayshi was a 23-year-old student at the University of Washington. Determined to exercise his constitutional rights as a citizen, he refused to register under the 1942 exclusion order and intentionally violated curfew. Mr. Hirabayashi then voluntarily surrendered to authorities. Tried in October 1942, he was found guilty and sentenced to prison. In 1943 the U.S. Supreme Court upheld the verdict of the lower court.
