The United States Geological Survey transferred this small level to the Smithsonian in 1908, noting that it had been used by the Water Resources Branch of the Survey but was no longer suited to the work of the organization. It must have been made to order, as it does not have a Heller & Brightly serial number, and it is not listed in Heller & Brightly's Remarks on Engineers' Surveying
Instruments.
