Discussion:

Smith Beers of Waterbury, Connecticut, received a patent (#1,325) for an odometer on September 14, 1839. It consists of a brass revolution counter that attaches to the axle of a wheel, a dial equipped with three pointers, and a bell that rings every mile. This is the model that Beers submitted to the United States Patent Office along with his patent application.
