Altitude and Azimuth Instrument

An altitude and azimuth instrument is best seen as a theodolite suitable for astronomical and geodetic purposes. Like a universal instrument, it measures horizontal and vertical angles (or altitudes and azimuths). It should not be confused with the geodetic theodolite, which measures horizontal angles (or azimuths) only.
