Portrait of a Sugar Cane Cutter

The low wages and back-breaking labor of the sugar industry kept generations of Puerto Rican workers in poverty. This photo by Jack Delano shows Don Toli of Guayanilla with machete in hand cutting sugar cane. Delano was of the generation of New Deal artists who began documenting the life of Puerto Ricans on the island in the 1940s.
