Online Transcription Note
This online version of Dennis H. Klatt's 1987 paper, Review of
text-to-speech conversion for English, is presented in its entirety,
using original page numbers to accommodate years of citations to this
important historical work. This online paper is part of the Smithsonian
Speech Synthesis History Project (SSSHP) web pages, which can be reached
via the "SSSHP Contents" and "Labs" (speech laboratories) hyperlinks
at the very top and bottom of the pages.
Klatt bibliography sources appear also on the SSSHP laboratory pages. The
SSSHP pages are separately indexed, including some co-author's names
not in the Klatt index, which lists only the first and second
authors.
The Klatt paper can be accessed sequentially by using
"Page-" (move backward) and "Page+" (move forward) on the secondary
navigation bars at the top and bottom of the
pages. "Go to Page" on a navigation bar allows the viewer to jump to
any numbered page directly. The online paper can be accessed also from the
table of contents ("Contents" on the navigation bars) where section
headings are listed.
Changes to the original format
To facilitate access as web pages, several changes have been made to the
original paper format:
- Illustrations are presented as separate web pages, called from
hypertext links within the text. The browser "back" button can be used
to return to the previous text location.
On an illustration web page, the
first text reference to the illustration can be found by clicking
on "1st Ref." The page number for the original location of the
illustration is shown also.
- An Index has been added to show were subjects and bibliography
sources are discussed.
- Forward and backward hypertext links are provided for the Notes
and the Appendix speech synthesis examples.
- A few comments have been added within square brackets
as "[Ed: . . .]."
- The name of bibliography reference "Klatt (1987)" was changed to
"Klatt (1987a)" to not conflict with this online paper.
